Kampot Pepper and Palm Sugar Kampong Speu are the first Cambodian products to receive Protected Geographical Indication, called PGI. The Minister of Commerce of Cambodia has signed the decree in April 2, 2010 granting the status to the Kampot Pepper and Palm Sugar Kampong Speu.
“A PGI refers to agricultural products and foodstuffs whose characteristics are closely linked to a geographical area in which takes place at least their production, processing or preparation.”
The PGI, recognized by the World Trade Organization concept, are managed by inter-professional associations, Kampot Pepper Promotion Association (KPPA) and Kampong Speu Promotion Association (KSPA) gathering the producers of Kampot Pepper and Palm Sugar Kampong Speu, refining companies, and direct marketers.

Concretely, this means that the name “Kampot Pepper” can not be used without the prior consent of the association, which conducts inspections to verify the origin of the pepper and also the compliance with the specifications of the Kampot Pepper.

Starling Farm is growing its pepper without using any pesticides or chemical fertilizers, working to the highest organic standards. And as such, Starling Farm Kampot Pepper is certified by the Cambodian Organic Agriculture Association (COrAA).
The Ecocert logo guarantees a crop without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Inspectors verify all stages of the chain to ensure product traceability to the consumer. Compliance of the various operators in the chain is controlled by the company EcoCert Sa.

Three European Union schemes of geographical indications and traditional specialties, known as protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG), promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs. This regulation (enforced within the EU and being gradually expanded internationally via bilateral agreements between the EU and non-EU countries) ensures that only products genuinely originating in that region are allowed to be identified as such in commerce.
Since 2016, Starling Farm Kampot pepper has joined this elite group of gourmet food items whose names are protected by the European Union, joining products such as Gruyere cheese from France and Parma ham from Italy.
